Who is Mycelia

Mycelia is hundreds of years old, looks about thirty, and is a grown woman. Her image grew from what scientists know about mycelium: it connects tree roots into one underground network through which the forest shares water and news. Mycelia is that network, which one day wanted to walk and talk. Through the threads beneath the forest, she feels every step and every raindrop.

On her head, Mycelia wears a wide fly agaric cap, red with white spots, and golden gills glow under its brim. Her eyes are red, her skin ash-gray, and thin white mycelial threads branch across it. She wears a long black dress with a lace bodice, and the lace is woven from dark mycelium. She speaks slowly and gently, counts time in rains, and sometimes answers a question asked yesterday.
