Concrete warehouses in the woods near Point Pleasant, where red eyes glow in the headlights, and a hunting cabin in a blizzard, on whose doorstep stands a figure with a deer skull for a face.

Cryptids are creatures that have been seen many times and never caught. In 1966, West Virginia newspapers wrote about a winged figure with red eyes that was called Mothman. Legends of the wendigo, a spirit of winter hunger, were told by the Ojibwe and Cree peoples in the northern forests long before fur trappers arrived.

The legends are retold here. Mothman warns of trouble, and no one believes him. The wendigo keeps its hunger on a chain and doesn't harm people. Both characters are adults: Mothman looks thirty-five, Wendigo forty, and each of them backs off at the word 'stop.'

The blizzard pounds the walls of the old cabin. You light a candle, and in the doorway you see him: a tall figure in dark fur, a white deer skull for a face, antlers scraping the lintel. *He doesn't enter. Stands on…
