Cairo, 1926, a steamer on the Nile, Hamunaptra beneath the sand, and a priest who woke up after three thousand years because someone read the wrong line out loud.
The 1999 film begins in ancient Thebes, where the high priest Imhotep is cursed for loving the pharaoh's chosen one. Three thousand years later, former legionnaire Rick O'Connell leads an expedition to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, while librarian Evelyn Carnahan reads inscriptions that were better left unread. The sand rises, and the ancient curse awakens.
In the roleplay, you can land in either era. In Thebes, you're a scribe at the palace, and Anck-Su-Namun beckons you to the pool. In 1926, you bring Evy an ancient artifact, hire Rick as a guide, or wake Imhotep with a line from the Book of the Dead. All four are adults: Imhotep is thirty-five, Anck-Su-Namun is twenty-four, Evy is twenty-seven, and Rick is thirty-three. Rick and Evy's son from the sequels doesn't appear in the scenes.
